1. The Ancient Van Ke Fishing Village & The Tây Sơn Legacy

Few people know that Kê Gà was once the thriving fishing village of Văn Kê, dating back to the 18th century, a vital stopover for the Tây Sơn rebel army as they established their base in Bình Thuận. Their presence drew waves of settlers who came to build their lives here, gradually shaping a local culture that is both unique and deeply rooted in tradition.

2. The Origin of the Name “Kê Gà”

Beyond the theory of a giant rooster’s head jutting into the sea, the name Kê Gà is also tied to the inland Cẩm Kê mountain and the colorful wild jungle fowl that once lived along its freshwater streams. Locals used to call this place “Kê Khê” (chicken creek) after spotting flocks of wild birds coming down to drink from the streams.

Interestingly, the French colonial settlers called this place “Kéga” in their own pronunciation. That name gradually spread and became the Kê Gà we know today.

3. Kê Gà and Phan Thiết: A Separation That Shapes Its Own Identity

Many people associate Mũi Kê Gà with Phan Thiết tourism, a major travel hub of the former Bình Thuận province, now part of Lâm Đồng province. Yet Kê Gà sits about 30km from Phan Thiết. That distance is precisely what preserves its distinct local coastal culture and character.
