1. The Legend of Zen Master Huu Duc
According to legend, Zen Master Tran Huu Duc (1812–1887) came to live in a cave on Ta Cu Mountain, surviving on spring water and wild vegetables while he meditated, vowing not to descend the mountain until he found the true path to Buddhist enlightenment.
Besides, he became well-known for his healing abilities and compassion toward the poor, attracting many Buddhists who sought his help.
In 1880, Empress Dowager Tu Du suddenly developed a severe eye ailment. Royal physicians were unable to cure her, but thanks to Zen Master Huu Duc’s remedy, she recovered quickly. In gratitude, the royal court conferred the title “Linh Son Truong Tho” upon the place where he practised and honoured him as a Great Venerable Monk.
2. The Giant Buddha Statue – The Pride of Ta Cu Mountain
A visit to Ta Cu Mountain would be incomplete without seeing the famous Reclining Buddha statue. Behind the pagoda lies a massive Buddha statue, recognised as the largest mountain-side reclining Buddha in Southeast Asia.
The statue, known as the Shakyamuni Buddha in Nirvana or simply the Reclining Buddha, stands 11 meters high and 49 meters long, symbolising the 49 days and nights the Buddha meditated under the Bodhi tree before attaining enlightenment.
The statue depicts Buddha lying serenely on his side, resting his head on one hand, leaning against the mountainside—both majestic and harmoniously integrated into the surrounding natural scenery.
Construction began in 1962 and was completed in 1966. The creator of this monumental work was architect Truong Dinh Y, one of Vietnam’s top ten architects at the time. During the building process, he lived at the pagoda, shaved his head, wore the simple robes of a monk, and personally sculpted the statue while cultivating his spiritual practice.
His dedication resulted in a remarkable masterpiece, now a sacred symbol that every Ta Cu visitor hopes to witness at least once.
3. The Story of the Loyal White Tiger
Along the path to the main hall, visitors will notice a stone statue of Zen Master Huu Duc accompanied by a powerful-looking White Tiger.
Legend has it that during his meditation retreat on the mountain, the Zen Master tamed a white tiger, which faithfully guarded the entrance of his cave day and night, never leaving his side.
After the Zen Master passed away, the White Tiger sorrowfully stayed near his grave. Not long after, the tiger also died and was buried by the monks near the Zen Master’s tomb.

From Mui Ne – Phan Thiet, visitors only need to travel about 55.2 km to reach the mountain. From Ho Chi Minh City, the distance is approximately 165 km, making it suitable for day trips.
